Weeds

Non-native plant species are spread throughout the area. In the Limestone Box Forest the majority of weeds are grasses, but in the Warm Temperate Rainforest there is a major issue. The more prevalent species include Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus), English Ivy (Hedera helix), Cape Ivy (Delairea odorata), Myrtle-leaf Milkwort (Polygala myrtifolia), Shade Crassula (Crassula multicava subsp. multicava), Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster glaucophyllus), Mirror Bush (Coprosma repens), Bridal Creeper (Asparagus asparagoides) and Asparagus Fern (Asparagus spp.).
All are garden escapees.
Control methods include physical removal and chemical treatment.
Pest animals are limited to local pets. These include dogs being walked off leads.

Aims

  • minimise or control pest plants using methods which minimise the disturbance to natural systems and effects on park values,
  • to identify and respond to the occurrence of new plant species which a potential threat to bushland areas,
  • educate public about keeping pets contained at night.

Management Strategies

Prepare and implement an integrated program of monitoring and control of pest plants, giving priority to:

  • Control of Blackberry (Rubus fruticosus), English Ivy (Hedera helix), Cape Ivy (Delairea odorata), Myrtle-leaf Milkwort (Polygala myrtifolia), Shade Crassula (Crassula multicava subsp. multicava), Cotoneaster (Cotoneaster glaucophyllus), Mirror Bush (Coprosma repens), Bridal Creeper (Asparagus asparagoides) and Asparagus Fern (Asparagus spp.),
  • Control of new pest plant infestations and pest plants with a high potential for invasion,
  • Minimise the impact of control programs on native flora/fauna and neighbouring land,
  • Use control methods that minimise impacts on natural systems,
  • Attain cooperation with adjoining land owners and community groups to coordinate pest plant control efforts and containment of local pets,
  • Inform visitors and adjacent landholders about relevant pest plants and animal control programs,
  • Continuing monitoring program with community and primary school group involvement.
