MBR working bee May 22 achievements
The working bee went very well on Sat 22 May.
We achieved the following :
The gate was installed at the bottom of the park (end of Christmas Street)
Two Parks Vic signs showing “Metung Bushland Reserve” were installed. One at the bottom of the park and the other at the entrance near the school

Big Working Bee Sat 22 May
A working bee will take pace on Saturday, 22nd May, commencing at 9.00 am and concluding 3.00pm.
Because of budget constraints (the original Parks Vic grant of 10,000 is almost exhausted) please bring your own lunch and refreshments.
The work will involve putting in the last gate, placing boulders, any cleaning up that is needed and planting [...]
Recent Posts
- Provide structured opportunities for community members to participate in the management of the Reserve, initially under the stewardship of the Friends of Metung,
- if feasible, establish a Metung Bushland Committee,
- liaise with all stakeholders to support the implementation of a management plan,
- explore opportunities for other community groups, locals and local businesses to pursue an interest in planning and provide funding,
- encourage further links with the Metung Primary School,
- develop and evaluate a long-term volunteer strategy that incorporates individual skills and interest in the rehabilitation, research and on-going monitoring of the Reserve.
Management Goals
- lack of community recognition,
- lack of interpretive, advisory and way-marker signage,
- lack of wayside and vantage point seating,
- damaging vehicle use; cars, 4WDs and motorbikes,
- uncontrolled access,
- rubbish to be removed, rubbish dumping,
- pest plants (see weeds),
- biodiversity gaps,
- Land Manager stewardship,
- ad-hoc and poorly-formed walking and cycling tracks,
- unrecognised linkages to other Metung walking tracks.
Metung Bushland Reserve Issues
- significant, rare and endangered bushland in the heart of Metung,
- habitat refuge for birds and other fauna,
- varied and accessible walking and cycling opportunities,
- panoramic vantage points to the Lakes,
- of historic significance to the Tatungolong clan and more recent residents.
Metung Bushland Reserve Assets
- funding and sponsorship to support infrastructure and biodiversity improvements,
- build on the draft manangement plan created by Emma Orgill, Diploma of Conservation and Land Management, Forestech TAFE,
- health benefits of increased walking and cycling opportunities,
- tourism benefits,
- biodiversity and habitat protection and improvements,
- stewardship and educational resource for local environmental and school groups.
